What are the Ides of March?

Beware or Aware?

The “Ides of March,” originally referring to March 15th in the Roman calendar, gained its infamous spiritual meaning through its association with the assassination of Julius Caesar and the Shakespearean play “Julius Caesar,” where a soothsayer warns Caesar to “Beware the Ides of March.”

Historical Context:

  • In the ancient Roman calendar, the “Ides” marked the middle of the month, and the Ides of March was March 15th.
  • The Roman calendar was based on lunar cycles, and the Ides, Nones, and Kalends (the first day of the month) were used to reference dates in relation to the phases of the moon.
  • Initially, the Ides of March was not an ominous date, and it was a religious holiday dedicated to the god Mars.
  • However, Julius Caesar was assassinated on March 15th, 44 BCE, which forever connected the Ides of March to misfortune and tragedy.
  • Caesar’s assassination marked the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire, further cementing the date’s importance in history.

I am intrigued that the ides fall towards the end of every quarter of our current calendar. What a good time to pause, listen, and assess where we are in our goals, hopes, and dreams. I like to practice harvesting my journal – rereading and highlighting what What a good use of the ides! The meaning of the word implies to look, to see. These moments in time serve as a great reminder to take a deep look into ourselves and where we are at the present moment.

Beware or aware?  Both words offer insight to our spiritual journey.  Where do I need to be more careful?  Am I nearing a dangerous edge and need to withdraw back into the arms of God?  Increasing our awareness of and putting a name to our location, our needs, our hopes, our invitations gives us clarity, direction and meaning to life.

The phrase “Beware the Ides of March” is now used idiomatically to describe a period when something negative is likely to happen or when people should be cautious.

It’s a reminder of the power of fate and the importance of heeding warnings, even if they seem far-fetched.

In addition, the ides of March marks the beginning of Mercury Retrograde! It is soooo very important that you protect your energy spiritually. I personally like to use Arc Angel Michael. I ask that he surrounds me with his white light of protection everyday but I am sure I will ask for even a stronger amour of protection.

During this time be cautious of your words and actions. Try to refrain from all words and actions that would lead to negative results. Try to avoid beginning anything new and refrain from signing or writing a large contact such as a car, home, lawsuit, and such. Instead go deep inside, meditate, and pray and ask for guidance in making the best decisions!
